Lace vs. Metal: Battle of the £10 Pencil Skirts

Jane Norman was my Mecca throughout my bodycon-dominated uni years, but had gone a little off-radar following its post-administration decline in store numbers. However, since spying the perfect stripy pencil skirt on a recent foray into the wilds of Croydon, I decided to check out its other offerings online. Turned out it was still bodycon paradise, with, even better, tons of its signature midi skirts on sale for peanuts! I snapped up a zip-backed white lace pencil along with a stretch metallic version for £10 each. I'm afraid they seem to have sold out online now, but I'd definitely recommend checking out their other bargains, and peeking in-store if you're lucky enough to have one nearby...

One word of warning, though, if you happen to be more Kardashian than Knightley of derrière... after these pictures were taken, the metallic skirt split across the horizontal back seam whilst I was enjoying a civilised night out at the theatre... thankfully I had added a longline blazer to the above ensemble!

Stripe Stew

Mixing monochrome stripes kinda became my signature style last spring/summer, so I couldn't resist picking up this year's variation on the Breton pencil... Chunky-striped midis are everywhere at the moment, but this Jane Norman version edged ahead of the pack for me thanks to its thick, high-quality-feel fabric, structured in-'n'-out cut and pattern-matched seams (no, I don't want to look like a chess board from the side, thanks). Only one slight downside - it does restrict you to either an extremely languid Marilyn-style-sashay or a frantic old-lady-style-hobble.

Of course, the temptation to try it out with my old faithful stripy separates was too great to ignore, and, although I hadn't been sure how successful the venture would be, I was pleasantly surprised by the effect of layering different widths and orientations together!
